Four Generations of Girls

Ladies of the Family by nameless.ship
Ladies of the Family, a photo by nameless.ship on Flickr.
The baby there is my aunt Mary Margaret Gammon. Holding her is her father's mother Carrie (McKee) Gammon. Left to right the others are her mother's mother "Poppy" (Overington) Jones, her mother Claudia (Newman) Gammon, and her great-grandmother Claudia (Fries) Overington.

  1. Is that the Overington Mansion in the background? We live on Pilling Street across from Overington Park in Frankford and have been searching for pictures.

  2. No, Oaklands was demolished before my Aunt Mary was born. We only have a few photos of the old house, ourselves, but I will see what I can find and probably make a post about it. Thanks for your interest!

  3. my first post did not post so I'll try again! I love seeing pictures of The Overington Mansion. Your photo's of the mansion is nothing like I seen. Thank you so much. Since I was a kid living on Pilling Street I would listen to the older ladies talk about the Overington's. I always thought that "Poppy" was a man. I finally know what the Overington's look like! Did you know that the roads and some of the pavement around the house and barn are still there? There are some of the tree's remaining also. We keep the park very nice and plant flowers and tree's every year. If you don't mind I would like to send these pic's of the mansion to the Frankford Gazette an on line newspaper. I would like to make copies of the mansion to hang in my house which sits in front of the park. Thanks so much for your research and pic's it means ALOT to me. Joseph Garvey

  4. I'm glad that you enjoyed my pictures! I have been out to the park but not in several years now. I must have been about fourteen when my grandparents took me, and that was almost ten years ago now! You are welcome to share the photos with whomever you choose. I am glad that they mean something to other people out there.

My great-grandmother Poppy's real name was Claudia (the same as her mother and daughter). She was nicknamed Poppy because when she played house with her siblings she always played the part of the father. Her sister Margaret was called both Margie and Peggy at different points in her life.

  5. My shop is down the street from the Oxford Trinity Church. I have passed by everyday on my way to work and never realized the connection to the park across from my house. I stopped by this morning and took pictures of the graves. If you would like me to email you the pictures, you can send me an email at ctgarvey@aol.com.

  6. Upon reviewing my research, it seems that this probably IS Oaklands, still standing much later than I had previously thought.

  7. I was thinking the same thing. Same shutters and columns.
